Hello and welcome to the pampered pooches spring news letter!

I hope you are all well and happy and enjoying the lovely sun.

firstly I would like to thank everyone for their referrals.  that's the best possible form of advertising, word of mouth. Thank you x

This news letter will contain tips on keeping your dog cool, how to deal with ticks and general chit chat.

New grooming room

I am awaiting delivery of a new summer house which will soon be my new grooming room!  This is due to us having an extension where my grooming room currently is.  But it will be business as usual. I apologise now for any inconvenience this may cause

How to keep your dog cool in summer

  • put a fan low to the ground to give your dog a breeze
  • put a damp towel on the floor for your dog to lie on.
  • only walk it in the morning and evening avoiding the midday sun
  • have its belly and armpits shaved
  • regular brushing helps remove dead hair
  • dogs loose most of their body heat through the ears and feet, keep them free of hair and clean of wax so the air can flow
  • spray your dogs feet with water
  • get a paddling pool if you are brave enough!
  • and remember dogs can get sun burnt too! So if your dog is sensitive to the sun, put a little bit of sun screen on them.

Ticks

You can pick ticks up from anywhere, mainly in forests and fields, but sometimes from a fox or wild animal that has been in your garden!
Some of the disease that a tick can carry are babesiosis, bartonella, colorado tick fever, ehrlichiosis, lyme disease, powassan viral, Q fever, rabbit fever.
Tick removal
  • It is NOT recommended to put alcohol or oil on the tick before removing it because this can make the tick empty the contents of its stomach directly into their body. It is then that you have a much bigger chance of getting infected with diseases the tick carries at that time.
  • The mouth of a tick includes a hypostome which is implanted in the skin during the tick bite. There are a lot of hooks on this hypostome so it's difficult to remove it. That's why you never pull a tick with your fingers.
  • Another dangerous aspect of using your fingers is that you will put a pressure on the ticks body and it will throw up which increases the risk of disease.
  • By using a specialised tick twister the tick is turned out of the skin and this lowers the risk of breaking the ticks legs.
  • there are old wives tales for tick removal, burn them with a cigarette so they release, cover them with washing up liquid so they cant breathe and probably many more!  not many are safe because it causes the tick to expel the content of its stomach into the blood stream. Allowing whatever disease its carrying into the body.
  • the most common disease from a tick is lyme's disease. This is a disease that can affect the nervous system. The symptoms are headache, sore throat, stiff neck, muscle aches, fatigue, general malaise
  • If any of these symptoms occur after a bite from a tick, it is very important that you immediately see a doctor because if Lyme is not treated, it can spread to the joints (muscle pain, arthritis), nervous system (meningitis, numbness, tingling, a burning sensation in the extremities, loss of control of one or both sides of the face, severe pain, fatigue, depression) and to the heart. Even eye, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems can develop.
  • Dangerous is the fact that the first, and simple, symptoms can disappear but after a couple of months, even years, the more serious problems can occur which makes the disease quite severe and chronic.
  • Treatment: Lyme can be treated with a long period of antibiotics IF spotted early. When you are dealing with the more serious problems, you will probably have to take extended and repeated courses of antibiotics.
I can help remove ticks, but keep a look out for them. I am getting increasing numbers of dogs with them.
